The idea of aliens has been around since ancient Greece. Introduced by many philosophers was the true story of Lucian of Samosata’s 1752 novel. The concept of aliens as monstrous creatures was later introduced in 1898. In modern time, we look at aliens as just extraterrestrial beings that we are unsure of. 

Aliens are often viewed as a myth, but some people tend to believe in their existence. A tenth grader attending Hillgrove named Avery Bush shared her opinion on aliens. “I think they would be green, ugly, and short because that is what common and popular ideas have made them out to be.” Live Science states, “While little green men or towering predators are the stereotypical depictions of extraterrestrials in film, any aliens that might be out there are unlikely to resemble those characters,” experts told Live Science. “Instead, the unique environment of the moons or exoplanets that these aliens call home could make their physiology completely different from anything found on Earth.” This gives an example on how impactful different variations of something can be.

A teacher at Hillgrove, Mrs. Adkins says, “I think that the government keeps stuff from the public to keep us from being fearful.” If people are distracted by the thought of a strange monstrous creature invading Earth, it could have a horrible impact on their day to day life. “The first well-known UFO sighting occurred in 1947, when businessman Kenneth Arnold claimed to see a group of nine high-speed objects near Mount Rainier in Washington while flying his small plane. estimated the speed of the crescent-shaped objects as several thousand miles per hour and said they moved “like saucers skipping on water.” In the newspaper report that followed, it was mistakenly stated that the objects were saucer-shaped, hence the term flying saucer. This evidence from Britannica covers the start of a more modern idea of aliens including UFOs, a way of transport. 

Aliens are such a cool, thought-provoking idea and many don’t know what to think or how to feel. But are they truly real or are they just a myth? What does the government truly know about extraterrestrial life? Will these questions ever be answered? These are the thoughts tons of people around the world.
