Homework is a struggle for students to accomplish throughout the school year and can mess with their mental health and outside life. According to mysunshinelearning.com “Many students wrote that homework causes them to sleep less than they should and leads to headaches, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, weight loss and stomach problems as well as a lack of balance in their lives. Most experienced distress and/or lacked time to engage in important life tasks outside of school.” Students dread over doing their homework because they're exhausted from a day of their brain consistently thinking and homework makes it worse. Bryce Cid a sophomore grader from Hillgrove High School states that “Kids try to get home and relax but schoolwork is interfering with their life, and they can't do things.” Bryce feels that students can't manage homework or schoolwork in their outside life and homework just gets it the way.
Most students spend way too much time on their homework, some not even getting any rest. According to onlinedegrees.sandiego.edu “While 10 minutes per day doesn’t sound like much, that quickly adds up to an hour per night by sixth grade. The National Center for education Statistics found that high school students get an average of 6.8 hours of homework per week” Some students might even get higher than 6.8 hours per week depending on what they take.
Noel Kellman a junior from Hillgrove High School, says “2.4 hours on a bad day on a good day I say 30 minutes but I'm a procrastinator and it bundles up a lot.” Noel most likely spends about 12 hours weekly doing his which gives him no time through the week to do other activities. Noel also claims, “It affects me greatly I have less time to do the things I want and maybe it might be because I'm a procrastinator it's not my fault that I'm not choosing to do my homework on time and it’s the school's fault.” Noel and other students strongly dislike the time and effort homework takes each week.
Stress has a big effect on a student's mental health. Homework is one of the biggest stresses factors to students. According to eagle.bchigh.edu “More than 70% of the students said they were “often or always stressed over schoolwork,” with 56% claiming that homework was the main stressor.” Students stress more on homework than anything because it gets piled up most of the time and it can get stressful knowing you have pages of homework to do when you get home. Miles a sophomore from Hillgrove High School says about if homework is stressful to students, “Yes and no because they have fewer things to worry about when they go home like because if you have extra activities and you don’t have to worry about doing your homework.” Miles agrees on the fact that students are the main stressor or get stressed because of homework. Homework should be banned around the world so students can be less stressed and more free.
