There are many advantages and disadvantages of taking a gap year before starting college. On one hand it can better prepare students for college, but it can also cause students to get behind and forget information if they do not have a plan for the gap year. Hillgrove High School student Claire McEntire says, “I think a gap year can help by taking that year of rest and reflecting on how they are as a person to try and be better for college. However, students could forget what they learned or spend too much time distracted with other things instead of preparing themselves for college." This shows that there are both positive and negative effects to a gap year.
Some parents force their kids to go to college and that causes them to stress. Hillgrove High School student Tabatha Zapota says, “Parents think you need to go to school and do something with your life. We have more things to learn now, and it could take a toll on us. If you focus on yourself college is not a requirement, you can go at any time, and it will still positively affect you. You could also face disapproval from people and students do not like when people take a gap year you might get some looks.” This explains that many students can still be successful and have a good life and take a gap year even though many people may judge or think differently of you for taking one.
Students who take a gap year often feel lonely and disconnected from the world. Hillgrove high school student Zamarion McNeil says, “A gap year could help you focus on yourself, but you could also feel lonely and depressed. You can lose many friendships and connections.” That is why it is important to have a plan and know what to do when you get to college. Zamarion says, “You could get a temporary job and start making money and start saving towards college or whatever you want to do." By doing this you will be prepared for college when the time comes and have an idea of what you want to do in life.
