At Hillgrove, the meaning of Christmas is shaped by more than just gifts or time off from school. It is a season rooted in togetherness, gratitude, reflection, and connection. For many in the Hillgrove community, Christmas becomes meaningful when people slow down and focus on what truly matters. Hillgrove Junior Samara Bectumba says, “The meaning of Christmas is, like, togetherness, gratefulness, really spending time with your family and, like, taking the time to go away from everything and focus on that.” This idea emphasizes the importance of stepping back from daily stress and reconnecting with loved ones. The atmosphere of the season also plays a powerful role in making Christmas feel real. Teacher at Hillgrove Dr. Bailey says, “Like the music and just like seeing all the colors, the red and greens, I think that's when it starts feeling real. It's like all the warm and fuzzy music and the decorations that everyone does and all that.” These familiar sights and sounds create a shared experience that brings comfort and joy, reminding people that they are part of something bigger than themselves.
Christmas at Hillgrove is also about giving and connection. Hillgrove junior Samara Bectumba says, “I think it's more about connecting and giving… you want to give something that somebody else wants, and you want to have time to connect with more people that you love.” Giving during Christmas is not just about material items, but about thoughtfulness, generosity, and strengthening relationships.
However, some community members express concern that the holiday has changed over time. “I think it's become more commercialized,” Admin Mr. Defrezzer, referring to early Christmas displays and shopping events that overshadow the season’s deeper meaning. Despite this, many remain grounded in personal and religious traditions. Dr Bailey says “Personally, for me, it does have a religious meaning… it’s not about the gifts, it’s just more about the meaning of Christmas.” Ultimately, Hillgrove’s meaning of Christmas reflects a shared hope for kindness and peace; Mr. Defreezer says “Joy to all. Peace on earth. I wish we had more of it… I think there's a lot of hate in the world right now.” Through togetherness, generosity, and reflection, the Hillgrove community continues to define Christmas as a time of warmth, unity, and hope.
