The transition in high school as freshmen can be a very pivotal movement, and a whole lot of anticipation. Capturing the essence of this experience, three freshmen were interviewed and all had unique experiences and perspectives. This year is more than just academically based it’s about self-discovery and laying down a solid foundation for success.
Academically freshmen can face increased rigor and expectations. The workload becomes heavier, and students must learn to adapt to the changes laid out in front of them. Subjects become specialized, and the need to increase one’s study habits becomes more intense. ‘’Since I finish my work, I don’t really have much to do’ stated Alex Holguin. Proving to stay focused and remain studious helps in the long run because it can lead to free time and less stress.
Socially freshmen year is a time for exploration and finding one’s identity students will encounter a mixed group of peers, each having different interests and personal backgrounds. Navigating new social dynamics joining clubs and sport teams and finding a comfortable circle to hang around becomes the new priority. ’’Friendship in middle school is more complicated while in high school it is more together’’ said Layla Jackson showing the transition from how she viewed her friendships in middle school versus high school Then she went on saying ‘’ I joined an afterschool club called the program where we do fun stuff together’’. Freshmen find themselves developing skills to balance staying academically inclined like Alex but still having a social life like Layla. This period often includes students finding their passions, developing their personalities ‘’I want to have a job that lets me have good money’’ said Anna Kate Hall Emphasizing that this is the era when students start thinking about their future and other opportunities.
