Homecoming court is a traditional part of the homecoming celebrations at Hillgrove. The Homecoming court consists of a selection of both boys and girls that are nominated and voted on by their peers, to represent their class. The Homecoming King and Queen were voted for by all grade levels and announced during halftime at the homecoming football game. Hillgrove senior Ella Mcgee took home the crown of homecoming queen. Ella had a very positive reaction to winning, saying, “I didn’t think I was gonna win, so it was really surprising, but I was very grateful, and felt very loved”.
Duties of the homecoming court include being recognized at the pep rally, taking part in the homecoming parade, and walking onto the field during half time at the homecoming football game. Harper Wallace, a sophomore on homecoming court really enjoyed her experience with the festivities, especially the homecoming parade, “Riding in the parade was so fun. I got to see bunch of younger kids, and they were all like, "Oh my gosh, I love your dress.” So, it was fun seeing younger kids look up to me and having all my friends by me.” The main part of homecoming court festivities is being escorted onto the football field, by family members, or a trusted person in the student's life. Another Hillgrove student on the homecoming court, Abby Mcdow, expressed who she chose as her escort for the night, “My older brother who was a senior and I chose him because he's my best friend, I guess.”
The Election process for the court is a competition of popularity, personal qualities', and school spirit. Harper Wallace was elected on to the homecoming court to represent the sophomore class and had this to say, “I feel like I was a good candidate because I'm very involved in my school, I'm in multiple clubs, and I really keep up with my academics, so I just felt that I would be a big representative.”
Homecoming celebrations are something that Hillgrove students look forward to every fall, that create lasting memories. A representative at SVHS.co stated, “The event fosters a sense of belonging and community that extends beyond classroom walls. Through shared experiences, students develop a deeper connection to their school and its traditions”. The homecoming court is something that deepens the recognition of Hillgrove students and the Hillgrove community.
