Many students are unhappy with the four tardies policy at Hillgrove High School. Students feel that they should get more than four chances before receiving Saturday school. When students are on their third tardy, they begin to stress to get to school everyday which can affect their mental health. Hillgrove High School student, Zanari Heughs says, “When I am on my third tarty, I begin to stress because I do not want Saturday school. I start overthinking and really have to make sure I get to class on time.” This shows that the four tardy policy can cause students to stress and affect their mental health.
In addition, there are often time challenges having Saturday school as a punishment. Hillgrove High School student Amare Garrett says, “Teachers may not want to wake up early and supervise Saturday school and when the kids are doing their work the teachers may get bored and have nothing to do for the time period." This explains that Saturday school can be just as boring to teachers as it is students. Another issue is that some students do not do any work in Saturday school they just want to sleep or sit there which is not allowed. Hillgrove High School student Amare Garret says, “Some students might try and get their work done and others might not do anything.” This causes the teachers to be stricter and make sure they stay awake and do their work like they are supposed to.
In conclusion, being tardy is not always the student’s fault. Hillgrove High School student Reese Simpson says, “It is not always our fault when out parents drive us to school. There are often time accidents on the road which causes traffic to be backed up or sometimes there is just a lot of traffic.” This shows that students should not have to be penalized for tardies that are sometimes out of their control.
