Taylor Swift’s twelfth album, “The life of a showgirl” is an upbeat catchy pop record, that swifties all over the world gathered to hear. But the album has received mixed opinions since its release on October third. The album was a large step in Swift’s career after she took a break from the music industry following the release of her eleventh record, “The Tortured Poets Department”, and completing the highest grossing tour of all time, “The Eras Tour”.
The album “The Life of a Showgirl” is a collection of vibrant pop tunes, depicting her newfound love with her fiancé, NFL player Travis Kelce, and the demands of show business. Hillgrove sophomore Parker Hunt explained how the record felt to her, “I like the vibes. I like that it's really upbeat and fun.” Hillgrove student Ava Black also felt the good vibes saying, “It puts me in a happy vibe, because most of the songs are pretty upbeat.”
Taylor Swift is known for her detailed narrative lyrics that capture personal experiences and emotions. Unlike some of Taylor Swifts past albums, “The Life of a Showgirl” shifts her lyricism to her current happy and romantic feelings. With this shift in Swift’s current lyrics, a number of fans are hesitant with where Swift’s song writing has gone. Alyssa Goldberg at USA Today said, “It's hard to imagine the same artist who has crafted such beautiful melodies and narratives could write something so derivative, she's already proven to be an amazing song writer, so why regurgitate “Cringe” internet slang”. Hillgrove student Ava Black shared how she felt about the lyricism by saying, “I thought that there was a little bit of a downgrade in her lyricism, but, I mean, I do think it was still a good album.”
Many fans have had different stand points. Some are appreciative of the upbeat feel and cheerfulness while others find it a letdown compared to the lyrical depth of past albums. Hillgrove student Eleanor Brasington stated how she felt about the album in comparison to the past, “She has had a lot better, and I feel like it kind of doesn't fit.” she also said, “It just sounds kind of boring.” While some listeners enjoyed and appreciated the album, others miss the depth and complexity that once defined Taylor Swift’s work.
