Music has been a huge part of human history, but how has it changed and developed over the years? Technology has advanced significantly, allowing people to create music without the need for a professional studio. This shift opens opportunities for new artists to create and share their work, even from the comfort of their own rooms. Student Makani Msangi at Hillgrove High School believes, “It’s similar to social media; people can make music from their bedrooms, and they can sell it from there too.” In the present day, technology has made it easier to discover new music and artists. Apps like Apple Music, Spotify, and SoundCloud have created platforms for listeners to explore and find new talent. Chalin Young, another student at Hillgrove, states, “On Spotify, you can look up new artists or get recommendations based on similar artists you’ve already listened to.” This accessibility makes it much easier for those wanting to discover new music.
Music has a significant impact on people and their emotions. It has always been a powerful means of self-expression. Makani Msangi explains, “My life is my passion. I fell in love with music, and it helps me express myself; it romanticizes my life.” Music allows individuals to connect with their feelings, which highlighting its importance as an art form. For example, student Terrell Dawkins at Hillgrove states, “For me, it really helps with my stress; I can lock in and focus.” Emotionally, music can serve as a therapeutic tool for many.
Over the years, music has become increasingly diverse. Popular songs now often come from not just mainstream artists but also underground artists gaining recognition through platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Current student Chalin Young notes, “Right now, underground trap is really popular in the rap scene, but other genres are still growing.” This evolution provides even more opportunities for new artists to rise and gain traction.
